I created this piece after returning from a 3 day retreat in the mountains. My style comes from a very dark place in me. If you meet me in person, you will take me as a tall, awkward, funny, upbeat kind of person, but I’ve had my fair share of dark days. During the 3 day retreat, I spent a lot of time in my dark head space working through some personal issues. When I got back, I sat down at my computer and had to get my head out of that place. I started fooling around with type and short phrases that were dancing around in my brain. I had spent 3 full days trying to sort some things out and felt like I had made almost no progress.

I tend to try to control everything and I was fairly annoyed that I couldn’t figure out anything that I could do to work the issues  I was trying to deal with. I got the idea to start working in a different language. I don’t speak spanish, but I like the practice of the letters having character for themselves, outside of the words that they are creating. After bouncing around, I settled on the phrase “There is nothing you can do.”. It’s a reminder to myself that as hard as I try to fix things, there is a solution outside of my own that will have it’s way regardless of what I do.

I’m super excited to partner with both Ficciones Typografika & Cotton Bureau. They are two initiatives that I have admired. They both have a unique vision and passion that I am honored to be a part of. As stated by Erik Brandt on his site, “Ficciones Typografika is a project dedicated to typographic exploration in a public space and is curated by Erik Brandt. The exhibition surface is a 72”Wx36”H poster board which can host three 24”x36” posters at a time.” Each week, a different designer is featured.

Cotton Bureau is a great new idea. As stated on their website, “Cotton Bureau is a curated online community for design- and tech-focused t-shirts. You submit the artwork, and we do the selling, printing, shipping, and customer service…so you don’t have to.” They have a bunch of really awesome shirts by a bunch of really awesome designers. I would highly encourage you to check them out.

You can follow me on twitter for the announcement of the release of both the posters and shirts.
